The graduation exhibition “Our Vision,” jointly planned and created by Melody Cheng, instructor of the Event Management course in the Bachelor of Communication and Media program at the University of Saint Joseph, together with graduating students, recently concluded successfully at Albergue SCM, 8 Calçada da Igreja de São Lázaro, Macao.
The exhibition ran from May 29 to June 7, 2017, and attracted visitors from local society as well as professionals from the education, culture, and media sectors. It received positive feedback and achieved strong overall results.
The exhibition featured three documentary films covering the Macau E-Series Civic Club (ECCM), Macao’s cultural and sports facilities, and the experiences of overseas students. It also showcased 33 humanistic photography works focusing on traditional nostalgic shops in Macao. Through video and photography, students documented local industries and old shops that are gradually fading from view, hoping to preserve valuable cultural memories of the city and allow future audiences to understand earlier histories and ways of life through their work.
Under the guidance of course instructor Melody Cheng, students began with classroom theory and applied what they had learned systematically to the real event-planning process. From theme and concept development, work planning and production, venue design and setup, promotional planning, and opening ceremony arrangements, students participated in and took responsibility for every stage.
Through this project-based learning process, students not only deepened their understanding of communication and media knowledge, but also gained hands-on experience in project management, teamwork, and on-site problem solving. The project fully demonstrated the educational outcomes of connecting teaching with real practice.
Class representative Tang said that the successful organization of “Our Vision” marked an important step from theory to practice and from the classroom to society, laying a solid foundation for students’ future entry into the cultural, media, and creative industries.
The opening ceremony was held at 3:00 p.m. on May 29 and was attended by a number of guests, including Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes, Director of the Macao Government Tourism Office; Carlos Marreiros, renowned Macao architect and Chairman of Albergue SCM; Wong Ut Ping, Head of Higher Education Student Support at the Tertiary Education Services Office; Ho Pui Hou, President of the Interior Design Association; Lo Tak Chung, member of the Cultural Industries Council and President of the Macau Advertising Association; Lam Hiu Fung, Director and General Manager of TDM Canal Macau; Lo Tek, General Manager of All About Macau Media; Yiu Ka Chung, Vice President of the Macau Convention and Exhibition Association; Professor Jenny Lao-Phillips, Dean of the University of Saint Joseph; Professor José Manuel Simões Barbosa, Dean of the Faculty of Creative Industries; and Professor Álvaro Barbosa, Programme Coordinator of Communication and Media.
